Gaga ha scritto questa canzone per suo nonno mentre stava morendo. Nel suo speciale del 2011 sul giorno del Ringraziamento, ha svelato che è stato un momento specifico condiviso tra i suoi nonni a fornire l’ispirazione per la canzone.
Gaga ha dichiarato:
“Erano sposati da 60 anni e mia nonna mi raccontava di mio nonno che dormiva in macchina per strada solo per poter stare vicino a lei – erano italiani e molto severi, quindi non c’era modo che il nonno dormisse a casa della nonna quando lei era piccola. Quando l’ho vista salutarlo, ho capito che in quel momento entrambi riconoscevano di aver vinto nella vita perché avevano vinto nell’amore l’uno con l’altra”.
