La nuova era di Shawn Mendes è iniziata sotto buoni auspici. “Treat You Better”, il primo singolo estratto dal nuovo album, ha registrato ottimi numeri nella classifica mondiale, arrivando in top 10 in molti mercati. La canzone inoltre è stata ben accolta per il tema affrontato, ossia la violenza all’interno di una relazione. Infatti il cantante, sconsolato, si chiede come mai la ragazza preferisca il cattivo fidanzato a lui. Un tema purtroppo molto attuale sotto certi punti di vista.
Nel frattempo Shawn ha deciso di non restarsene fermo ad aspettare l’uscita del disco “Illuminate” programmata per il 23 settembre. Dopo “Ruin” (Qui per maggiori informazioni), ecco che infatti è spuntata in queste ore sull’account Twitter ufficiale della popstar un’altra produzione contenuta nel progetto. Il titolo è “Mercy” e al momento sono ancora sconosciuti coloro che ne hanno aiutato l’elaborazione (sicuramente il 18enne canadese sarà presente tra i songwriters, come accaduto per tutte le sue canzoni).
Si tratta di una canzone più lenta rispetto a “Treat You Better”. Nel testo, il cantante supplica una ragazza di essere onesta sui suoi sentimenti verso di lui e l”atmosfera che si crea è decisamente più malinconica e triste se confrontata che le altre due canzoni proposte. Un brano davvero di pregiata qualità, un pezzo della miglior fattura che questo ragazzo ha dimostrato di saper proporre, e che ci fa davvero ben sperare per “Illuminate”, un disco che a questo punto attendiamo con ancora più ansia.
